AB OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the usefulness of saliva samples for detection
of antibodies to HIV-1. MATERIALS & METHODS: Paired specimens of serum
and saliva were collected from 32 HIV-1 seropositive outpatients (CDC
type II: 25, III: 2, IV: 5) at AIDS clinic in our hospital. Saliva
samples were collected from same seropositives periodically for 12
months. After centrifugation, clear saliva were collected and stored at
-40 degrees C until testing. Serum and saliva were tested with ELISA
(ELAVIA MIXT) and western blot (WB, LAV Blot-1) method by using kits of
Diagnostics Pasteur. RESULTS & DISCUSSION: Thirty of 32 saliva samples
of HIV-1 seropositive cases were confirmed to be positive in ELISA test
for anti-HIV. Two saliva samples were indeterminate, and one of them was
collected under 4 months after the first diagnosis of HIV infection. In
the follow-up study, samples taken from the same individuals 2 or 4
months after first sampling showed positive results. All saliva samples
from seropositives were constantly positive by ELISA for anti-HIV. On
testing with the WB, 64 (71.9%) of the 89 saliva samples collected from
28 seropositives were positive, and 25 samples were indeterminate. The
anti GP-160 band were detected in all saliva specimens, but the
detection rates of other bands in saliva were lower than those in serum.
The mentioned results suggested that saliva was useful for screening of
antibodies to HIV-1 using commercial ELISA kit.
